Joshua Graves is a hands-on design leader and the author of We Need to Talk: A Survival Guide for Tough Conversations (Rosenfeld, 2025). Equal parts designer and leader, he makes sense of messes and loves complex problems. And for 15+ years he’s built products, systems, and teams from the ground up.
He’s who people call when a project is stuck and everyone’s talking past each other, and he wrote the book on how to get it moving again. His background is human-centered design, psychology, and conflict resolution, and he teaches the same ideas in workshops in the US and abroad.
Earlier in his career, Joshua launched AwesomeGIFs, whose images are still in use all over the world, designed the first concussion-detection app for iOS, and created typefaces including Cosmata. See more of his past projects.
