Overview & Problem #
DeepCast set out to make podcasts more accessible and engaging by summarizing long-form audio into concise, shareable insights. The goal was to be the wikipedia of podcasts.
We wanted to set the stage for future iterations that would pull professional podcasters onto the site for converastion and marketing.
I contributed to two key phases of the product:
- DeepCast V1 – the initial product experience and user flow, designed to optimize sign-ups and showcase the feature set.
- DeepCast Creator – a standalone experience for power users and podcasters, with a strong landing page and ecosystem support.
Role #
Across both phases, I was responsible for defining user flows and designing the ideal product experience. In support of that, I conducted user research for preference tests on sign-up flows and featuresets.
Everything needed to clearly show why someone wanted to sign up and be a part of this, and I made sure we hit those marks. I also crafted the visual design and initial brand direction.
Approach for DeepCast v1 #
The goal for v1 was for users to do the following:
- Find a podcast they were interested in.
- Get quick summaries and takeaways they can share online.
- Set up a future in which people could talk with their podcast.
To do that, we tested what was most effective, and ultimately settled on letting users search or browse by genre. We also wanted to highlight what we thought was most relevant to them.
Approach for DeepCast Creator #
Of course I made a landing page, but it wasn’t just any old landing page. It focused hard on leading with clarity by communicating benefits upfront. This let DeepCast convincingly show podcasters how it fit into their workflow without sucking up all their time.
I got to do some fun work and visual exploration that built on their theme of going deep. Thanks to some beautiful brand guidelines, I got to explore the use of gradients, grain, and nautical-inspired depth to create an immersive brand feel.
I also layered in some fun microinteractions and animations for a polished, engaging experience.
Results #
- Thousands of new users joined within 3 months of launch with low drop-off (<30%).
- Steady retention growth thanks to a compelling featureset.
- Proved product viability, leading to the next phase of growth and landing additional rounds of funding.
